Shake and Spill Games:

Watch as they play the Shake and Spill game

Materials and supplies

The "Shake and Spill" games, as opposed to the other games, are the first step games that concentrate on recognizing the different parts of a number.  Students begin to recognize the grouping of objects quickly which is called "subitizing."  These games allow for differentiation as students are able use numbers 4-10 and beyond.

Games are a fun way for students to build a "sense" or complete understanding of mathematical concepts.  Shake and Spill games help students learn the different parts of a number such as 7 and 0, 6 and 1, 5 and 2, 4 and 3, 3 and 4, 2 and 5, 1 and 6, 0 and 7 all make the number 7.  Students use their "Just Right Number" such as 7 with each of these games.  When the student knows all of the combinations of a number without hesitation, they have mastered the number. The student progresses to the next number.  The  new "Just Right Number" is 8.

These games are purposely staged by starting with Shake and Spill games then Story Boards followed by Bead Bracelets.
